I thought i might post up some pics of my motor to help others how to tell the difference between a normal black motor and the Nascar/ Pillow block.

1. When looking at the motor from the front..... on the rear left hand side near the sump, you will see the numbers XE192540 and you will also see the numbers 302.

2. Once the sump is removed, you will notice that the main caps are 4 bolt ones, but are bolted up with 2 bolts. Also through the caps, you will see that the block has the holes pre-drilled and threaded for the 4 bolt set-up.

3. Also on either side of the block, you will also see the extra casting for the cylinder walls.

there was 1 on ebay a little while ago that was apparently a pillow block, they rekoned that the pillow blocks differed to to the nascar blocks. the pillow blocks didn't have the 4 bolt mains like the nascar ones, they just had larger water jackets for better cooling. is this true??

Not D block Nick, They were the early imported Clevos till XY or early XA. Thats what I have in my XE at the moment. But my matching number pillow block hasn't got those casting numbers either.

There are are 2 types of these blocks,
The usual XE# block with the "pillows", often confused with the "NASCAR" block, thicker pan rails, thicker main webs, and thicker bores. Some drilled for 4bolt some not.
Also there is the XE# H/duty only offered EX factory or in F350 h/duty, often dubbed the "NASCAR" block because the late 80's NASCAR racers would buy them direct from ford or when they were no longer available new they started sourcing them throughout the trade, many from retired F350 Armagaurd fleet vehicles. They have all the same thicker bits as the std XE# block but also have siamese cylinder walls.

They come with 4bolt caps without the outter bolt holes drilled, 4 bolt caps with only 2 bolts in them , 4 bolt caps and 2 bolt caps. The blocks can come drilled for 2bolt or drilled for 4 blot but not tapped in outter holes or they come fully drilled and tapped for 4 bolt,
Pretty much whatever they felt like.

They were just an aussie inprovement on the old clevo blocks that would of become the usual block if the V8 had not been axed.

Hi fellow ford nuts! I have just listed my nascar block 351 ltd on ebay and thought you might know someone who is interested. From what i have been told and seen over the years very few nascar blocks went into production cars and there were some that went into ambulances as well. I looked for one for 2 years and only found it by luck, lack of storage space ( have a 1957 tbird,1959 star model mainline, 1956 customline and 1966 lincoln convertible in the shed so it chockers) and time issues have forced me to sell, car is located in brisbane and will sell. i hope i havent broken any rules by posting this here and must say im not out to make a quick buck and would prefer to see the car restored to its former glory as the flagship of the ford fleet and not parted out otherwise i would have done that myself.
