View Full Version : Odometer not working
MY ZL302

G'day guys,
I reset my trip meter the other day and now the trip meter and odometer aren't working. What could the problem be and how can I fix it? Is it just a matter of getting behind the gauges and re-aligning the cogs? The speedo still works so that's no problem. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Found the problem. After pulling out the instrument cluster and getting in to the speedo, odometer, I found that the plastic cog that engages the little drive motor has lost about half its teeth. It was very brittle and the teeth broke off by just touching them. I doubt I'll be able to replace it so I guess I'll have to get a whole unit.

i think you used to be able to get them from rare spares or superoo falcon spares (wa). Obviously cheaper than replacement of entire unit.
i knew a guy who was selling them, i'll try and find his number
the reason they break is if you reset them when you're moving you'll strip all the teeth...

beats me why ford made them out of cheese...
seriously though, i pulled mine apart the other day (got a new/second hand spack cluster and the odo didnt work) and the cogs seem like theyre made of cheese...
does the lubricant eat the plastic?

i wonder what cruisin central uses when he does the refurb?
not sure about the lube eating the plastic... but i know it happens to the power window gears also...

Probably brand new cogs as you can still buy them.
Around $10 , try covs or Ford , if not there I got mine
from AISAT instruments in Perth.
Andy.
most ford places don't have them...

you can make these,
i haven't done it but i know a bloke who has, he made a mould from an original one and filled it with resin of some sort to create a cog which is like ten times tougher than the original ford unit.
bloody fiddly to put in though, a background in electronics would help.

Yep, lube eats the cogs
Any instrument repair shop should have them - I'm pretty sure they are the same as Commodore ones...

Heyo,
I made also made a mould of a good gear and can now cast them out of resin, which is as strong as normal gears.
The gear is made of cheese to stop people screwing with the odo. The cheese is usally strong enough but the grease drys out over time and becomes like glue, sticking the cog to the axel, the motor then just rips the teeth off cuz it cant rotate the gear. (EA-ED, and older skylines have this problem also, as they too have a cheese gear, except its smaller and more fragile.) Commodores have a mechanical speedo and dont have this anti-tampering feature... Holden cut costs any where they can...
Anyways, I can manufacture and fit this gear to a cluster for $60 + return postage. I can also change the odo reading if you are fitting a new motor or are upgrading the cluster and need the kms to match the original kms....
Regards
Ren.
mine must of had alot of cheese eating glue on it, it stopped at 85000, and ive seen many xseries with like 400000. hmm. if i just decided to change the whole cluster, (to one where the odometer was working) would the cog just be in the back of it. and work again?

Easy to do people? Cause I might have a doner cluster.
yeah piece of piss if you're just going to change clusters...
or you can change the gear if you have a bit of patience and a screwdriver or two. and update the odo if you feel the urge ;)

hello guys can anyone guide me through actually getting at the cogs
I have the cluster stripped down and the speedo unit free in my hand
now what do I do?
I have since discovered and read an excellent, "how to" on replacing gears in an earlier model.
Probably very similar to ED model
go to D.I.Y how to replace speedo gears in XE cluster by Hendrixhc
pictures as well
thank you

you can buy new aftermarket ones off ebay, genuine ones require a special lube to work properly and they still made of cheese.
