View Full Version : Stalling Problem

My ZL Fairlane EFI 250 Auto has been a bit strange lately, since i degreased the engine and tightened up the rocker cover that was leaking badly. It has been stalling when changing into gear and occasionally when coming to a stop. I had a look and noticed it was missing its idle adjustment screw, though this had never seemingly been a problem before. so i put one in and didn't seem to make any difference. It idles at 1200 and about 800 when in gear (are these normal i figured they were?). When changing into gear the revs drop to about 500 and it almost stalls or it does. if it survives that the revs come back up to 800 and it seems fine. Also sometimes when changing from D to N the revs will jump up to 2000 instead of 1200 and sit there for a while and then eventually back off to 1200 again. The gearbox seems to be engaging rather harshly - not exactly smooth. tried idling it at 2000 and changing it into drive but it still drops to 500 and barely survives the gear engagement. any ideas?

The factory specs for idle-ing are 775rpm - 825rpm. So when its in gear its fine. I can't answer any of those other questions.

Surely someone must have some ideas they can throw at me?

ISC is at the back of the rocker cover, u can clean it out im sure

try unplugging it while its idling too.

this site is a good point of reference http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=39

Yeah it sounds like to me that your ISC is holding your idle and not kicking in when the revs drop. Try disconnecting it and adjusting your idle (when engine warmed up), then reconnecting it. It's either that or the unit is actually not working at all :(

P.S. Or the throttle cable or some other cable is holding the idle instead of the idle screw, so the ISC doesn't "know" what to do.

hey ICEWOLF how did you go with the stalling problem? If you figured out what was causing it can you let me know because mine is doing the same thing

hmm my bro's car holds idel at 500-600rpm. Theres no trouble in gear selection this way because the rpm isnt high enough to engage the auto and make it "clunk" Holding at 2000 and slipping in gear will clunk it as it's the same thing as dropping a clutch with your breaks on.
check the trasmission oil level.

and about the screwy idel pattern, check fidel (fast idel solinoid) on the back of the rocket cover.
