View Full Version : Throttle lags and stutters.

Hey, my 84 XE when i give it a descent amount of throttle, it sort of chokes and stutters and if I go hard on the throttle, it basically conks out. Everytime this happens though I hear a loud air gust when its stuttering. Also the fuel pump is making some strange loud ticking noises.
Also it has a descent throttle lag.
In need of a oil change aswell.
Drew442's suggestion was:
check it for a vacuum leak (choke it with a rag or your hand and see if it still runs). look for hoses off or broken. replace fuel and air filter. spray some carby cleaner in it, follow the directions on the can. check that the choke goes off, you may need to adjust it.
if its still bad you might want to kit the carby and replace the inlet gasket..
Which I will all try tomorrow morning, but anyone else got some suggestions.
Clean out carb?
Petrol filter?
Air filter?
Change oil?
Bung fuel pump?
Is this when cold or all the time?

Worst cold, does do it to a much smaller degree when warm.

my car has started doing this also, to a much lesser extent though by the sound of things. usually it only happens once, and on the first decent throttle application.. anytime the throttle is jabbed afterwards it is fine. and mostly after a cold start
i changed leads, plugs, oil and air filter so far and it hasn't changed.
i reckon i'll try the fuel filter next

heh my 84 XE does that aswell :P
I have been told that the clutch is sticking....It happens when going up hills.....the revs pick up but the speed doesn.t

Oh and my small vacuum hose is broken and the big ones melted to nothing, so check them both.
At the back right of the air cleaner, there is a huge bundle of cables, see if any of them are split...

this usually comes about from an incorrectly adjusted automatic choke. At least it was the trouble on my weber. If you get your hands on a manual it has all the specs and steps to readjust the choke, I tried it and it fixed the problem on mine.

rip the choke butterfly out or disconnect choke if it's auto choke. Pain in the ass. Put a manual choke on, much more reliable.

I may have to get a manual choke put in my Xe....the choke doesn't even work lol
Yeh, unless I warm my 250 up into the temp range it will not go more than a snail's pace up my hill. Mine will be fixed when i go straight gas

check ur fuel filter, sounds fuel related

Hmm, XF0747, the previous owners do live out in country bush land and the road is like gravel for a k or two, so that may be a problem...
It does make sence aswell, you apply more throttle demanding power through fuel, and it just cant get it out.
My brother and I will be servicing it soon hopefully and the fuel system will be treated and cleaned etc including a fuel filter replacment so yeah. Sad thing is it is infact unregistered and I dont even have my L's yet so can't really test to see if it fixed it though.

if it was the filter then it would be consistent warm or cold.
there's nothing wrong with an electric auto choke they work fine, just adjust it properly.

Well I CAN'T drive the car when its cold lol so...
And auto chokes just suffer to much defects lol, well I'd prefer pushing a lever than sitting on 1 k revs for 5 minutes :D
my 250 XC does exactly the same. every day it coughs and splutters in the morning like a sixty year old smoker. if i take off before its warm it really struggles to even stay alive firing on only a rfew cylinders. but once she is going, what a beast!!

Yeah lol, I can only move it forwards and backwards like MAX 10 metres each way lol so it's not that bad for me at the moment but even just trying to move!
Though my handbrake cable seems to have fixed itself so, it's not as bad lol :D

when my XF was still carby i got annoyed and just ripped the butterfly off. Id rather do the 2 foot drive when it's cold and choke it the old fashioned way. before they even had butterflys for it =P
This was before i lurned anyhtigna bout cars though XD

I went into repco the other day wanting a fuel filter and they said they don't have any filters at all for carby's? Only EFI.

they are in a bucket near the oil/air filters and oil in the 'service' isle...
any fuel filter works, they arent model specific, they just sit inline in the fuel line... have a look at the old one.

yeah they suck arse. i spoke to my ex mechanic teacher and he says most d,e,f carbys dont have filters, about a quarter came out with them randomly and they were only on the return line anyway lol.
i used to get this sort of ages ago. my fuel pump shat itself soon after and i replaced it and that did it for me but it might not be the same problem for u.i thought this due to the fact that u said your fuel pump is ticking which mine did before it shat itself

Cars didn't come out with fuel filters for ages, like 90's or something I think.
Oh and, the mechanic said that because he obviously missunderstood you. He probably thought you ment a fuel filter for inside the carby (as some cars have). You probably needed to make urself a bit clearer but owell.
Anyways I will be servicing my car with my bro so I will post up if anything helped. Oh and trying injector cleaner (with carby or efi). That does good, but you must use it more than once..

sounds like my recently fixed issue.
If your on dual fuel, and you favor gas more than petrol, your weber floats corrode, seals go hard and you get air leaks between the accelerator plunger.
Carby rebuild cures all, just got mine rebuilt with gas floats and stronger parts and the car feels like it did from factory.
Forgot how hard they pull at medium rev's

+1 fuel pump.

Wow, this was a long time ago.
BTW it was the fuel pump. At some point in time they replaced the mechanical one with a solid state Electric generic one. It didn't start on me one day. Was getting spark, just no fuel, checked lines, nothing coming out of the output line from the Fuel pump. Bingo.
1 fuel pump later and she goes good again.
