Knocking in engine EFI XF

My brothers XF EFI has a loud knocking noise from the engine and it doesnt need oil, and he cant fiqure out what the noise is any suggestions?

my be the exhaust mount is it tight on the side of the block?

be a bit more specific. when is the knocking happening exactly? what sort of knock? how long etc

im saying five her an oil change with a 20 50 good brand oil and filter

and does it sound like its coming from the top of the motor or lower down

does the knocking increase in rate with engine speed? if no, then it could be something external to the engine...

otherwise, whatever was suggested above.
