View Full Version : My New 79 TE Ghia

Hi all,
Well thanks to this forum and Tim i am now the proud owner of a 1979 TE Ghia Cortina. Its a 4.1ltr BW35 with 130k (orig) on the clock for $700. The guy i bought it off was the second owner and bought it 8yrs ago with 84k on the clock. Since he had it he has redone the vinyl roof, had the rust bubbles fixed in the doors and taken real good care of it.
Unfortunately because he was from Victoria he didnt want to drive it back because it would cost more than to fly back, so he is handing in the plates. Now i know its unregistered but its bloody immaculate in and out.
The bad things i have found is it runs a bit rough because i think the head gasket is gone.It doesnt over heat but. Though i do have a spare motor so that dont matter. The reason i think the h/gasket is gone is because it looks like it is leaking oil from between the block and head? I will inspect it a bit better when i have time. The only other thing is the rubber corner on the back passenger side of the bumper has a ding in it.
It also has p/steer, aircon, c/control (after market of course), alarm, c/locking and immobiliser. I love it because it is 99% original, even the rims which have new tyres. Anyways heres the pics. Sry i took them in the dark.

Great buy man!!! it looks in fantastic condition well done and welcome to the TE club LOL, only thing I am curious about is the A/C, it dosen't have the A/C box in the engine bay, it just has the standard fan, is the A/C an aftermarket under dash setup?

Yeah im not sure about the aircon he said it was orig but it has aircon sticker on the back window and there is 2 vents below the heater controls and just to the side of that and you can see like a condenser behind the vents?

For sure, cant wait for tax time though gonna give the motor a freshen up and i wanna put my c4 behind it because the bw35 is an arse dragger lol! Has anyone done that before and my mate said to put the xf manifold and carby on. Is that the way to go cause when i freshen it im gonna mildy change things but keep it looking as stock as possible. Then i can relicence it.
P100_Ute
06-06-2009, 11:19 AM
youd need to find a C4 250xflow bellhousing.
pretty sure brads te has a C4 fitted? otherwise its a excellent BW35 to run into the 12's :)
if its a iron head then youd need to fit a alloyhead with the xf manifold etc.
if its already got a alloyhead then for sure.. the xf manifold with weber will bolt str8 on.
tyler06
06-06-2009, 11:43 AM
Awesome! Well i will have to have a chat to brad then and try to find a 250x/flow b/housing. Anyone got one? Thanks for the comments too guys.

Nice buy,
The air con in your car must be a dealer or aftermaket setup as the factory one has a giant aircon box in the engine bay.

06-06-2009, 05:41 PM
Cheers mate! Not that i care it works thats the main thing!
Braddyxe51
06-06-2009, 07:39 PM
Ya that air con is the same as the setup I cut out of my corty.
Ya can get a bell housing cheap as chups at superoo. I think I payed $30 or $50 for one. Used the box I had behind my v8. case fill type.
Manifold, my wagon corty had a 2 barrel redline with hole tapped in it for webber carby worked really well.
Chris if ya need a mani got one at home, will find out if other one is still around.

06-06-2009, 08:13 PM
ausome buy mate!
brings back memories, my old corty was almost exactly the same as urs, same colour, same interior and trim, same wheels, and was a second owner aswell and i paid 950, but i reckon urs is a bit better.
have u got any further plans for it or keep it as is?
also its an ironhead right, i have a redline iron head manifold sitting around doing nothing if ya interested.
tyler06
06-06-2009, 08:36 PM
Yeah it is cast and i think i wanna put the alloy head on when i rebuild it so make a pass on the manifold mike but big cheers for the offer. Unless someone can tell me cast is better. Other than that i want a classic looking sleeper lol. Brad we can have a chat wen ya get back ok. Cheers chris.

Sweet! Are you building the botomend for approx 300hp also or a different power level? It'll hammer in a light corty. I had one with only 145rwhp and was a fun car probably could have run a high 14 with a 3.5diff and 2500rpm stall...

24-09-2009, 09:01 PM
looking good mate, are you using the crow 650 cam?
are you going with a manual g/box?
tyler06
24-09-2009, 10:16 PM
Yeah i am building the bottom end with an ef crank and for 300hp i want as much as possible. I will be using 3.23 diff gears and yeah i am going manual and as a bargain it looks like i might have the t5 to suit a corty sussed boyaah. So hopefully it will be ready for motorvation.:hy:
P.S Mike i am using the 650 cam 8)
lowxdute
25-09-2009, 01:07 PM
Yeah with the early t5 1st is 3.5:1 and 2nd is 2.14:1 so 3.23 works well with this. For the 1/4mile it'd probably run a fraction quicker with 3.7's etc but 1st and 2nd becomes very very low and anyway with 3.23's it'll have the great torque/weight ratio to still use 5th on the highway at between 2000-2200rpm depending on tire@ 100 in 5th etc. What tire/rim you running also? This usually lowers the diff anyway as I only ran 205/60R13s in my corty and had the 2.92diff which equalled the same rpm of a falcon (205/65R15) with a 3.27diff anyway... So if you go 3.23 with say a 205/50R15 youve basically got 3.5's anyway if ya get me but traction would be interesting haha. You can fit 225/60R15's nicely if back isnt too low...

25-09-2009, 09:51 PM
I am planning on finding 15in saab rims for the drags to put slicks on. On the road but i want it to be as grandpa spec as possible and keep it looking stock as a rock so i will be keeping the ghia 13's with wider tyres and only lowered a touch. That is good info on the ratios but thanks alot Zac.
lowxdute
26-09-2009, 08:15 PM
With the 13's she'll be lower geared anyway then so that's a good thing with 300hp. You can run a 205/60R13 on the ghia rims then great tyre (I used to run toyos or nankangs for around $105 each in '05) and them with a 3.23diff is similar to a 3.5ratio with a 26x9xR15 slick for the drags etc... Only thing is a 3.23diff with decent height slicks will be geared a little too tall... You'd do a great time with 3.89's and a 26x9x15 slick etc

Its ok I just fitted the 650 even tho its way too big. Just have to swap wheels and diff and fix some wiring and it will be done.
Changing the pedal box is a pain in the behind. Yours being orig with not much wiring around it wont be to hard, Mine has painless wire harness and hard to get pedals around it.
