with so many people here with turbo X series cars here i wanted to get the legality side of things straight for my benifit and for others hopfully. i have gathered that on post 86 cars (which includes mine) you need to complete a drive cycle test at the cost of several thousand dollars. at this price i cant imagine too many people have done it, does this come as part of the RWC and engineering point of view? also who here has got their cars engineered and at what cost in vic? is this all that is required to make it legal? the reason i ask is because i want to be legal enough to be fully covered by insurance in case th worst should happen. cheers

as ltd351t said LPG, has to be a 1986 XF, no drive cycle test, as long as its got 4 wheel discs and i think a few other things it will pass engineers certificate at a cost of $600

i think it states "no man shall shoot off a gun while his female partner is having a sexual orgasm" or "On a road trip, the strongest bladder determines the pit stops, not the weakest."

oh i see. what do you all do with insurance then? do you insure your cars at turbocharged falcons? or just call them stock and hope you dont crash lol. id like to get mine properly engineered although it seems an emissions test is going to be impossible but the general feeling is that you cant on the later modle XFs
XF6250
16-02-2007, 01:06 AM
apparently they can pass the emission test but its bloody hard for a petrol xf

so it would really suck if u were in a crash or if it got stolen...i would personally take it 4 the emissions to get my baby insured, would hate 2 have all my work taken away

an engineers cert doesnt really hav much to do with insurance u can say to the insurance what ever you want and insure it for how ever much u want cant ya

16-02-2007, 01:38 AM
but because its modded the insurance company will come bak and say u have breached the contract of not telling them of mods or its not legal in terms of emissions? correct me if im wrong

well u tell them whats done to the car and they ensure u for what its worth or what ever and if the car is stolen they will never no cause the car is gone or if its in an accident take some shit out or off to make it legal cause face it 90% of cars on the road today in accidents are not up to roadworthy standards

lol @ eng. certificate indeed.
your insurance will cover you if you tell them what you have. i told mine everything i have, they go ok, is it road legal? is said, yep, but there's no signature on the engineers certificate.
as long as its legal, they replied.
unless the turbo is a proven causal factor in a claim, they can't reject a claim on those grounds.

what do u mean by the turbo being the proven causal factor in a claim
is that saying its the turbo's fault u had the accident (hypothetically sp..)

shannons said they will insure the xf, told em turbo charged, intercooled, aftermarket ecu etc etc etc

so what makes it legal then? i was nder the impression that the engineers certificate was what made it legal. if insurance is happy with it just being legal what did you do to satisfly them?
my freind at work put a worked silvia tubo motor in an old datsun. the thing is so old that adrs didnt even exist so he was told 'do what you want'.... lucky

an insurance company only needs the tiniest excuse to not pay out, id get it in writing that they will cover you with your mods, also consider, most people who are running turbo's are running big wheels low suspension, no emmision equipment, you say shannons will cover you? you wont know until its time to claim, because the car HAS to be legal, if it aint legal they are well within there rights to withold

i got a canary once, cop said i had to get the engine/turbo combo inspected for engineers cert among other things, (too low etc)
Jacked it up, took it to get it cleared, still turbo'd etc and no engineers, just told the guy there that it was on straight gas and didn;t need engineers. He seemed to deem that suitable, pulled off my little yellow sticker and away i drove.
You can be lucky sometimes.

if u get done for 2 low in my past experiences if u have to just take your car to vicroads for the inspection u can pretty much just take it straight in as is as they just measure the sill and not get under the car for the lowest point
charbz

OR just find some doggy bloke whos willing to do it for you....yea its got its downsides but its a cheap alternative...you just got to find him/her

according to the rules its 100mm at lowest point, when i got checked and everyone else i;ve seen they've always got the little '100mm wheel on a stick' thing out and rolled it under the car.
XF0747
17-02-2007, 12:21 PM
everytime i been canaried, they always get the 100mm stick out and check it, even if the car looks like its 50ft of the ground they still get the stick out and check

yeh but did they get right under the car an say measure the exhaust or anythin under the car

17-02-2007, 01:16 PM
they slid it right under the car, from front to rear, and side to side

Yep thats what they did to mine too.
Somehow weve gone from turbo legalities to suspension legalities. lol
Its time to go back, back to the topic....

half of the crap listed in this thread is a load of rubish regarding the insurance and legality side of things.
if you dont know me, you wont know that I manage at an insurance company..
I know how this all works, and beleive me, if you go and put a turbo on your car, or any modification that needs approval from the correct authority (i.e. approved vicroads engineer), then this certificate will be asked of you in the event of a claim. if its not legal (i.e. certified and complianced), then you will be up crap creek without a padle.
TUF250, if you want to know more info about insurance, PM me.

i alway thought this woulda been the case if i ever needed to make a claim.
however no mention of it was made when taking out the policy.

thats correct, they wouldnt mention it, they would basically mention something called "duty of disclosure" which basically means you must tell your insurance company everything, if you dont, then the policy becomes null & void in the event of a claim

i read some where that the drive cycle test is free in NSW, maybe you need to take a holiday north of the border for your drive cycle test.

Nah i pulled it off the road, then decided to sell all the turbo stuff, going to build a tuff N/A 6 for it for awhile.
Got over it a bit, had a change of interests, plus didn;t want police trouble etc as was getting harder and harder to cruise without getting pulled over.
