well, seems i'm goin from one xtreme to the nxt...
after sorting out my overheating problems in extreme conditons, i think she now might be running to cold...
i trialed my new setup today (3-core radiator, AU thermos, Tecatoly Gold coolant, sealed off gaps around bonnet) with the thermo relay switch set at ~90°
beautyful... 30° day, standing in slow moving traffic, waiting in the drivethrough for 15 minutes, waiting at traffic lights etc. and she never got over 95°
but when i cruise on the highway or just generally over 60kmh the temp drops down to 75°~80°
is that maybe a tad TOO cold?
what would be the optimal operation temp cor a 302C? i would've thought 85°~90° (pure guesstimation)
i'm using penrite 20-65w oil so the oil should be able to cope with fairly high temps, but dunno how well it would operate with colder temperature...

around 75 to 80 for performance, 85 to 90 for economy

mine likes staying at 85 on a moderately hot day, and can climb to 100 in traffic. gotta get the au thermos.

well worth while! since having mine i don't look back. once properly installed and set, these lil bad boys can cope with ne heat. and atm i'm still running my 55A alt, as well as neons inside and a fairly big stereo, no drop in power noticed yet.

Quick question on this topic...
How do you know exactly what the temp is? I'm concerned that my 302C is running hot cos the gauge goes over half way (sometimes over 3 quarters in traffic etc). The thermo fans sound like the go. Thanks guys...

ok, i know this from experience and i have even heard allan moffat say this in an interview, "clevelands dont mind running hot"
so with that assumption, up to 2/3rds would be hot, anything above that would be overheating right?

Clevos mind running hot....they dont perform once they heat up...KEEP THEM COOL i know...thermo fans make a massive difference, even with the stock radiators....only reason i say they dont like running hot is that the 302 XD, once it heats up it lacks in performance you feel a big difference, you notice the temp guage creaps up in traffic, we hooked up the thermo fans on a switch inside the car, (we call it race mode LOL) turn them on in traffic instead of waiting for them to say hello.
just basin it on past experience.

1 important lesson.... never trust the factory temp gauge. Go a nd ur'selves a good quality mechanical gauge, you cant go wrong.

as NO.PSI said, get a good mechanical gauge... i just recently upgraded to electrical, not sure whether i'm as happy with it as i was with mechanical...
but yeh, those gauges will give you the temperature alot more precisely then ur indash 1, and also state the temp in degrees, thats how you can know.
and if it goes over half way or even more, its running to hot. do u find she spits a bit of coolant on a hot day after turn her off? íf u do, make sure u always top her up with sum distilled water before you sart driving again, and mayb get your radiator flushed asap.

the rads in a XD 351, are these the same as the heavy duty, aircon ones used in front of a 6. How many cores are they supposed to have

pretty sure heavy duty rads and XD-XE V8 rads were the same.... 3 core.
the air con rad your talking about, isn't that just the condenser, mounted in front of the rad?

nah not condensor, the rad is bigger than the standard, to suit a/c
guys whats the best set up to keep things cool.....as in radiator water pump and type or brand of gauge to keep an eye on things???

std water pump, make sure you have the bypass plate in the block under the thermostat area looks like a brass plate, any 3 or 4 core radiator will do, autometer or similar mechaniccal gauge, AU or similar thermo's, using a cooler thermostat can help, if using thermoswitch set it too turn on before you reach desired temp, and having a master switch also so you can run it full time in traffick.
don't run without a thermostat, it allows water to flow too fast, water stays cool, engine doesn't.
failing that, an electric water pump can help keep cool in traffic as it pumps full volume all the time, but not many cars really need that, again don't run without thermostat, just gut a standard one, or 15-18mm hole in metal plate.

I fitted a mechanical temp gauge. My Cleveland ran at 50C in road useage (with no radiator grill in place). Mechanical gauges are the only way to really know your engine temp. Reasonably cheap and easy to fit, and priceless once you've got 'em.

Wow 50C is very low

Yeah I couldn't beleive it myself. But anyone who has an engine that runs warm - try this: spend ten minutes removing your grill, then go for a drive and check the difference. It's incredible.
When I put my grill back in it went up at least 20degC.

I take it for the engine temp to go that low you aren't running a thermostat?

I thought it did, but I didn't build my engne, so I might just check it visually for myself.
